We Have American SuperDivas Like The Late Whitney Houston

Who were the celebrities that I most wanted to emulate? It was Whitney Houston & Madonna! I wanted the grace, beauty & elegance that Ms. Houston possessed mixed with the raunchy sexiness that still is Madonna. Right before I hit that teenage rebellion stage, I was curious about how I could best tap into my femininity. These ladies helped me delve deeper into my feminine side. I feel like a part of my childhood is gone.

Even though I know that Whitney Houston had become drug-ravaged over the years, I always hoped that she could turn it around & make a comeback. Unfortunately, the death of Whitney Houston means that her career will be revived. People will buy her songs now that she is gone. We won’t be able to witness a Whitney that is alive & well singing spectacularly on stage in front of the world. The voice that wrenched so many hearts & souls will be doing that only through recordings now. What a crying shame!

Rest in peace, Whitney! You will always be the ultimate super-diva.

Here’s more from The LA Times:

“Whitney Houston, who found fame as one of pop’s biggest voices, has died. She was 48.

Houston died Saturday afternoon, a representative for the singer told the Associated Press. Houston’s death comes on the eve of the Grammys and on the night of Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala, at which she performed last year and was expected to attend this year.

No cause of death has been announced and law enforcement sources said the singer was found in a hotel room at the Beverly Hilton, where emergency medical personnel were called sometime Saturday.

The Hilton is the scene for Davis’ annual gala. On Thursday, Houston dropped by the rehearsals to offer vocal tips for Brandy and Monica, who were slated to be one of the evening’s headliners.

Press, including The Times, were in attendance for a junket with the reunited R&B divas and Davis. Though Houston greeted people her with a warm smile, she appeared disheveled in mismatched clothes and hair that was dripping wet with either sweat or water.

The visibly bloated singer displayed erratic behavior throughout the afternoon — flailing her hands frenetically as she spoke to Brandy and Monica, skipping around the ballroom in a child-like fashion and wandering aimlessly about the lobby. It was mentioned by a Grammy staffer that security personnel received calls of the singer doing handstands by the pool.

After leaving rehearsals, Houston returned to the ballroom — with her teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina in tow — as camera crews set up for interviews. The singer smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. A Grammy staffer said that during the interviews with Brandy, Monica and Clive, Houston was dancing just off camera to make the singers and Davis laugh. Grammy personnel expressed concern that she’d be caught on camera, and that reporters would write about her behavior.

Finally her daughter pulled Houston out of the room, and the singer skipped off. In our post of the event, we called Houston’s behavior “loose and lively.”

“She really loves and supports us both. For me, I went through a lot of very tumultuous moments and she would show up, not just with a phone call but physically when I needed,” Monica said when we asked about Houston coaching them. “That’s something that I’ve carried with me, especially with all that she’s been going through over the years herself. She’s never turned her back on the people she cared about.”(End of Excerpt) Read more here.

Celebrity Stylist Rachel Zoe Is Reportedly Pregnant!

I first heard of Rachel Zoe when she was styling Lindsay Lohan. There was speculation that she was introducing the young starlet to an unhealthy lifestyle of extreme dieting. A lot of folks believe that Rachel Zoe has an eating disorder. Here’s more on that from CelebWarship:

“Rachel Zoe shocked onlookers at the Cracked Xmas Fundraiser in Los Angeles on Sunday with her protruding ribcage and sunken face. The 37 year old celebrity stylist recently admitted she sometimes thinks she’s too thin, but has no plans to take care of herself.

“We’ve had Audrey Hepburn, we’ve had Twiggy, we’ve had Veruschka, we’ve had Kate Moss,” she said. “I’m trying to figure out why I am to blame for skinniness.

“Truthfully, I’ve never seen myself as being too thin,” she added. “Sometimes I’ll look at photos and be like, ‘Oh, that’s not a good look. ‘But generally speaking, I’m not too thin.” (Read more here.)

Sorry to disagree with you,Rachel. People cannot help but notice just how skeletal you look. It’s beyond being “too thin.” Hopefully, you will get cravings that will force you to eat. Because even though she seems to have an aversion to food, her pregnancy will change that.

At least,I hope it does.No one should try to emulate her body-wise. She is a great fashionista. But,Rachel Zoe is not someone I would take nutritional advice from.

Greg Giraldo Dies Of An Overdose!

I’ve only seen Greg Giraldo on a Comedy Central Roast once. But,he was pretty funny. It’s too bad that we won’t be privy to his raunchy brand of humor any longer. Giraldo has passed away from an prescription pill overdose. Another celebrity dies from taking too many prescribed pills. Will this scenario ever come to an end?

Here’s more from MTV:

“Comedian Greg Giraldo died Wednesday (September 29) at age 44 from a reportedly accidental prescription-drug overdose. Giraldo had been hospitalized in New Brunswick, New Jersey after he overdosed on prescription pills last weekend. According to TMZ, the overdose was not a suicide attempt.

Giraldo reportedly collapsed Saturday evening in his hotel room in New Jersey, where he was performing at a club. He was discovered by friends after he failed to show up for his scheduled performance. He was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Jim Norton confirmed the news via Twitter, including a picture with his fellow comedian: “Greg Giraldo passed away today. This is the last photo of us together, taken June 28 at Noam’s wedding. RIP buddy.”

A source close to Giraldo told TMZ: “Greg passed away today at the hospital in New Brunswick as a result of an accidental overdose. His family was by his side.”

The Giraldo family’s plans for a memorial service will reportedly be made public when they become available.

Giraldo was best known for his celebrity roast appearances and was a frequent guest on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brian” and “The Howard Stern Show.” He had also been a judge on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and appeared as a panelist on Jerry Seinfeld’s “The Marriage Ref.” (End of Excerpt) Read the rest here.

0706_lohan_court2_videoI do not feel sorry for Ms. Lohan. She cried her little heart out for the judge. But,it was to no avail because she’s going to jail! Lindsay Lohan got 90 days in the can!

If she didn’t want the judge to think that she wasn’t doing what she was supposed to,then she should have took her ass to class. Lindsay was out partying & getting wasted. She thumbed her nose at this judge because she is celebrity. I’m glad that she is finally getting what she deserves.

Save your tears for the big screen,Lindsay. No one is crying with you or for you. Appreciate the talent that God gave you & stop wasting it,girl! You have 90 days to put things into perspective.

The Late Lena Horne Hated The Moniker “Chocolate Chanteuse”!

I was going to get around to doing a post about the great Lena Horne at some point. It’s too bad that I’m writing it under these very, sad circumstances. If you have not already heard,Lena Horne has died at the age of 92. One of the most beautiful women to ever grace the earth has left it behind. Although she is gone physically, the mark that Lena Horne made on the world will grant her some measure of immortality.

For this was a woman who truly made a difference. She changed people’s perspectives regarding the types of roles that were suitable for black women to play. In the 1940’s, Hollywood was still portraying African-Americans as the homely-looking hired help. With Lena Horne, Hollywood began to realize that black women were comely women too. She broadened the roles for actresses of African descent.

And she didn’t just stop there. Lena Horne also was an avid civil rights activist. She took part in demonstrations & even helped Eleanor Roosevelt pass an anti-lynching law. This was no shrinking violet. Ms. Horne wasn’t afraid to wear her political beliefs on her sleeve. That’s why she was briefly blacklisted during the communist witch hunt which is better known as “the McCarthy era.”

Yes,Lena Horne was truly a womanly force. That’s probably why she disliked the moniker “chocolate chanteuse.” Because it really isn’t a accurate description of her at all. She was much, much more than a nightclub songstress.

Here’s more from The Washington Post:

“In Hollywood, she received previously unheard-of star treatment for a black actor. Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios featured Ms. Horne in movies and advertisements as glamorously as white beauties including Hedy Lamarr, Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable.

The media sometimes described Ms. Horne in terms that upset her.

I hated those awful phrases they used to trot out to describe me!” she once said. “Who the hell wants to be a ‘chocolate chanteuse’ ?”

Ms. Horne was also frustrated by infrequent movie work and feeling limited in her development as an actress. She confronted studio officials about roles she thought demeaning, a decision that eventually hurt her.

James Gavin, a historian of cabaret acts who has written a biography of Ms. Horne, said: “Given the horrible restrictions of the time, MGM bent over backward to do everything they could. After MGM, she was an international star, and that made her later career possible, made her a superstar.”

Ms. Horne appeared on television and at major concerts halls in New York, London and Paris. She starred on Broadway twice, and her 1981 revue, “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music,” set the standard for the one-person musical show, reviewers said. The performance also netted her a special Tony Award and two Grammy Awards.

Gavin said Ms. Horne cultivated a “ferocious” singing personality through her flashing eyes and teeth.

“Unlike Perry Como and Bing Crosby, who were warm, familiar presences, Lena Horne was a fierce black woman and not a warm and fuzzy presence,” Gavin said. “She was formidable and the first black cabaret star for white society.”

Ms. Horne said she felt a need to act aloof onstage to protect herself from unwanted advances early in her career, especially from white audiences.

“They were too busy seeing their own preconceived image of a Negro woman,” she told the New York Daily News in 1997. “The image that I chose to give them was of a woman who they could not reach. . . . I am too proud to let them think they can have any personal contact with me. They get the singer, but they are not going to get the woman.” (End of Excerpt) Read the article in its entirety here.
