How could I forget to mention just how great Mickey Rourke was as “The Wrestler“? I really felt like I was getting an in-depth look into the life of a real washed up wrestler. His portrayal of a wrestler is one that should garner him an academy award. . Wow! Here’s more on his magnificent comeback from MSNBC:
“Leo Braudy teaches English and film at the University of Southern California. He said there is an appetite among Americans for stories of redemption like those of Rourke, Downey Jr. and others.
“It’s certainly an old pattern,” he said. “The mythology is there for someone to come along and fill it. ‘Rocky,’ for example, which won best picture. That’s the basic story of a down-and-out boxer who comes back and redeems himself. Even if he doesn’t win, he redeems himself.
It has to do with the puritan DNA of our country. It’s about revealing yourself to the congregation and then being washed clean by the audience essentially.”
And even though the comeback story is quintessentially American, Braudy pointed out that different cultures have different responses. The French, he said, never stopped liking Rourke.
“The French tend to like the primitive in American artists in general,” Braudy said. “They like what they feel is really American. They used to do this with the Brits as well. They don’t like the sophisticated American artist. They like the primitive artist. They like someone who has gone through the mill rather than someone with a more obvious acting style.
“It’s the noble savage, dating back to the 18th century. The primitive and the natural. That’s a pattern that’s American.” (End of Excerpt)Read the rest here: (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28882888/
Mickey Rourke is so pumped by his comeback that he challenged pro wrestler,Chris Jericho, to a wrestling match. In this video, Chris Jericho responds. And on Larry King, Chris Jericho told Mickey Rourke to “be careful what he wished for“. Then, he told Mickey Rourke that he gave an immaculate perfomance as a wrestler. He told him to stick to acting, as if wrestling is not performance art!
After that, Chris Jericho told him that he had no respect for him as a person. I thought this proposed wrestling match between the two was a publicity stunt. Now, I’m not so sure. Chris Jericho seemed to be geniunely angry. Mickey Rourke looked sheepish & said that maybe he had “stuck his foot in his mouth“. Here’s more on the wrestling challenge from Reuters:
“Rourke made the announcement on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday night. The news was reported by celebrity news outlets Access Hollywood and E! News. Rourke even fit in a bash against pro wrestler Chris Jericho, telling a reporter that he “better get in shape.”
Rourke was stuck in the Hollywood wilderness for years because of on-set troubles and run-ins with the law. He gave a salty acceptance speech when he won a best actor award for “The Wrestler” at the Golden Globes on Jan. 11, and it’s clear that being back in the limelight has not taken the edge off Rourke. The question is: how will he fare in the ring? He is, after all, just an actor.”(End of Excerpt) Read the rest here:(http://blogs.reuters.com/fanfare/2009/01/27/wrestler-mickey-rourke-jumps-into-the-ring-for-real/
