Since 9/11, patriotism has been an underlying theme during election time in America. Some people define patriotism as supporting your country. That’s all fine & dandy. What does country really mean, though? Your country is the land and it’s people. If you view your country as the Bush administration, then those who don’t support George Bush & his policies are deemed to be unpatriotic. During this year’s election, we have heard extensively from the campaign trail about patriotism. Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, John McCain, & Joe Biden have all had their love of country questioned. John McCain has even made it a central part of his campaign with his slogan “COUNTRY FIRST”.That motto almost implies that you are disloyal to America if you don’t vote for John McCain. Barack Obama’s message of “Change That We Need” speaks to the voice of the dissenter. Barack Obama’s catchphrase seems to be catching on because of the mood of the country. Most of us have become a dissenting voice against the current state of affairs in America. The huge bailout that they all signed really has a lot of Americans feeling disheartened. It may have been the change that we need but who really put the whole country first? Wall Street is the hierarchy of the country which is what made the whole nation balk at this bailout! We all are in disagreement with the way our government has been operating. This is when it is time to become truly patriotic by doing all that you can as an American to ensure that this country remains the land of dreams for future generations.
This video shows two different types of patriotism. The mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah named Rocky Anderson took part in an anti-war rally during a George Bush speaking engagement. This caused a lot of outrage because his state was one of the biggest supporters of the Iraq war. He is a voice of dissent because he fears the direction his country is going in. The founding fathers were also voices of dissent against Britian. That is how America came to be. Another kind of patriotism is consistently on display whenver you tune your tv to the Fox channel. That would be blind patriotism. According to Glen T. Martin,
“But such blind patriotism destroys democracy and corrupts the people who blindly follow their corrupt and deceitful leaders. Today, we reap the whirlwind, the judgment of God, so to speak, the consequences of our trashing the vision of the founding fathers. For today, our leaders no longer keep it a secret. They openly admit and act on the truth that the United States runs a brutal, world-wide empire based on the immense military might of the Pentagon and the immense domination of U.S. multinational corporations over the global economy.” (end of quote). There are hardly any voices of dissent in the mainstream media regarding the Bush administration’s deceitful practices. What I have witnessed since the fear of terrorism struck Americans is this show of blind patriotism. By questioning the government, you run the risk of being accused of being a terrorist sympathizer. The entire staff at Fox will charge at their guests like raging bulls whenever they voice dissent. We must support our country at all costs is the view of the blind patriot. Even if the president has lied to the American citizens about weapons of mass destruction. Are we forgetting the “Declaration Of Indepence”? In particular,
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. The Patriot Act would have the founding fathers turning over in their graves if they knew how the Constitution was being disregarded. It is our duty as Americans to not follow our government blindly. To consider yourself patriotic, you must really take into account what is best for the future of our country. Putting your country first means putting both the land & it’s people first. All of it’s people regardless of their stature in society. If the people are not doing well then the country is failing. Recognizing that fact is true patriotism to me.
